Scriptorium terms
In short. Try Scriptorium free for 14 days. If you buy it, you pay once for one computer, the licence never expires, and every future version is free. What you write with it is entirely yours.
1. About these terms
These terms cover trying, buying and using Scriptorium. They are an agreement between you and Momo Designs cc (“we”, “us”), a close corporation registered in South Africa, registration number 2005/082538/23, of 2 Slabbert Street, Salsoneville, Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), 6059.
Together with our refund policy, our privacy policy and the licence agreement shown when you install Scriptorium, they are the whole agreement between us about Scriptorium. If these terms and the licence agreement ever differ, these terms apply. By installing or using Scriptorium you accept them; if you are accepting for an organisation, you confirm that you may.
2. The free trial
Scriptorium runs free for 14 days on each computer, with every feature switched on, so that you can make sure it does what you need before you pay anything.
When the trial ends, Scriptorium becomes a reader. It still opens every document so that you can read it, and it always will. Writing, saving, printing, exporting, copying, the assistant and reading aloud need a licence. Nothing you made during the trial is lost or locked away: your documents are ordinary files on your computer.
We may extend a trial when you ask. We may change the trial offered with future versions.
3. The licence
- A Scriptorium licence is for one computer. It is tied to that computer's code, which Scriptorium shows under File ▸ Licence ▸ This computer.
- It is perpetual: it does not expire, and it works with every later version of Scriptorium. Updates are free.
- You may use Scriptorium for any lawful purpose, personal or commercial.
- You may keep backup copies of the program for your own use.
- When you replace your computer, or if Scriptorium ever says your licence is for a different computer, email us the code it shows and we will move your licence to it.
The licence is not transferable to somebody else without our written agreement. Scriptorium is licensed to you, not sold: we keep all rights in the program itself.
4. What you may not do
Except where the law says otherwise, you may not:
- copy, distribute, rent, lend, sell or sub-license the program itself;
- share, publish or resell a licence key, or use one on a computer it was not issued for;
- reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble the program, or try to work out its engine, the longHand language it is written in, or its licensing;
- remove or change any copyright or other notice in it;
- get round, switch off or tamper with the trial or the licence checks.
5. Your documents are yours
Everything you create with Scriptorium belongs to you. You may keep, use, publish and sell it as you wish, and we claim no rights in it whatsoever. Scriptorium saves your work as ordinary Markdown files so that it never depends on us.
Keep backups of your work. We are not responsible for documents lost on your computer.
6. Price and payment
The price of a licence is shown on momoworx.com/scriptorium when you buy, and is currently R1,799 per computer (about USD 100), paid once. Payments are charged in South African rand. The price you see is the price you pay; a bank outside South Africa converts it and may charge its own fee for that.
You start on our licence server at licences.momoworx.com and pay on the secure page of Paystack, our payment provider. By paying you also accept Paystack's own terms. We never see or store your card details. You may also pay by EFT or against an invoice by arrangement with us.
7. Getting your licence
As soon as a card payment is confirmed, the licence is ready: in Scriptorium, press I have paid — fetch my licence on the Licence page. You can collect it again at any time, after a reinstall for instance. For payment by EFT or invoice, we send the licence when the payment reaches us.
8. Licence checks
A licensed Scriptorium checks with us about once a week, when it is online, that its licence still stands. It needs no internet to work, and if it cannot reach us nothing changes. We withdraw a licence only when it has been moved to a new computer, or was stolen, charged back, refunded, shared or used in breach of these terms. A withdrawn licence turns that copy of Scriptorium back into a reader the next time it checks with us. If we withdraw one by mistake, we put it back.
9. Services from other companies
The assistant works with AI services that you choose and pay for yourself, such as Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Mistral, Groq or OpenRouter, or with a model on your own computer. Your use of those services is under their terms, not ours, and we are not responsible for what they do or say. Check what the assistant writes before you rely on it. Extra voices for reading aloud come from the Piper voice collection, each under its own licence, shown before you download it.
10. Updates and support
New versions of Scriptorium are published on this website, and every one is free to anybody with a licence: install it over the old one and your licence carries on. Support is by email, at [email protected]. Features may change between versions.
11. Warranty
For 90 days from purchase, Scriptorium will work substantially as described in its documentation. If it does not, we will fix it or, if we cannot, refund what you paid, as set out in the refund policy.
Apart from that, and from any right you have that the law does not allow us to exclude, Scriptorium is provided as it is, without other warranties, including any implied warranty that it suits a particular purpose. Nothing in these terms limits a right you have under the Consumer Protection Act, 2008, that cannot lawfully be limited.
12. Limit of liability
As far as the law allows, our total liability arising from Scriptorium is limited to the amount you paid for your licence, and we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, loss of profit, loss of business or loss of data.
13. When the licence ends
Your licence ends if you break these terms and do not put it right within a reasonable time after we ask. You must then stop using Scriptorium. Your documents remain yours.
14. Law and disputes
These terms are governed by the law of the Republic of South Africa, and the courts of the Eastern Cape have jurisdiction. Before going to law, please write to us first so that we can try to put things right.
15. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms, for instance for new features or new law. The version in force when you bought your licence applies to that purchase. The date at the top shows when this page last changed.
